How to bypass Android’s lock screen pattern, PIN or password

The main reason to set up some sort of lock screen security on your smartphone is to keep strangers (or friends) from checking out your messages or private pictures. Beyond that, you don’t want anyone who dares to steal your phone to get full access to your mails, pictures or other sensitive data. But what if you’re the one who cannot access your phone? You could forget your PIN or pattern, right? Or someone pranks you by setting up a lock screen pattern and just leaves you struggling with it.

In any case, there’s quite an easy solution to this without smashing your phone against a wall (or your friend’s face). The only thing you need is to have Android Device Manager enabled on your device (before you locked yourself out of your phone). If you have a Samsung phone, you can also unlock your phone using your Samsung account.

Forgot your Android lock screen pattern, PIN or password? Here’s what to do

I tested the following methods using a lock screen pattern, PIN and password and was able to unlock my LG G2 with Android 4.4.2 successfully.

Unlock your Android device using Android Device Manager (ADM)

As already mentioned, the following method only applies to devices that have Android Device Manager enabled.

  1. On a computer or other mobile phone, visit:
  2. Sign in using your Google login details that you also used on your locked phone.
  3. In the ADM interface, select the device you need to unlock (if it isn’t already selected).
  4. Select ‘Lock’
  5. In the appearing window, enter a temporary password. You don’t have to enter a recovery message. Now click ‘Lock’ again.
  6. If it was successful, you should see a confirmation below the box with the buttons Ring, Lock and Erase.
  7. On your phone you should now see a password field in which you should enter the temporary password. This should unlock your phone.
  8. Now, before you go on with your life, go to your phone’s lock screen settings and disable the temporary password.
  9. That’s it!

Unlock your Android lock screen pattern with your Google Login (only Android 4.4 and below)

echo adrotate_ad(5, true, 0, 0);

If you haven’t updated your firmware to Android Lollipop (5.0), then there’s a faster way to unlock a lock screen pattern.

  1. Enter a wrong lock screen pattern five times (shouldn’t be hard if you don’t remember the correct one)
  2. Select ‘Forgot Pattern’
  3. Now you should be able to enter a backup PIN or your Google account login.
  4. Enter either your backup PIN or your Google login.
  5. Your phone should now be unlocked.

Bypass your Samsung phone’s lock screen using its Find My Mobile tool

This is an easy way to unlock your Samsung device if you created a Samsung account and registered it beforehand.

  1. Go to Samsung Find My Mobile.
  2. Sign in using your Samsung login details.
  3. In the Find My Mobile account interface you should see your registered phone on the left hand side. This tells you that you’re phone is registered to that account.
  4. On the left sidebar, select ‘Unlock my screen’.
  5. Now select ‘Unlock’ and wait for a few seconds for the process to finish.
  6. You should get a notification window telling you that your screen is unlocked.
  7. That’s it. Your phone should be unlocked.

Disable your lock screen using custom recovery and “Pattern Password Disable” (SD card needed)

This method is for more advanced Android users that know what the terms “rooting” and “custom recovery” mean. As the title says, for this to work you need any kind of custom recovery installed and your phone must have an SD card slot. Why the SD card? Well, we need to transfer a ZIP file to your phone and that’s usually not possible when it’s locked. The only way is to insert an SD card with the file.Unfortunately, card slots became kind of a rare thing in the smartphone world, so this will only work for some people.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Download the Pattern Password Disable ZIP file on your computer and put it on an SD card.
  2. Insert the SD card into your phone.
  3. Reboot your phone into recovery.
  4. Flash the ZIP file on your SD card.
  5. Reboot.
  6. Your phone should boot up without a locked screen. Should there be a password or gesture lock screen, don’t panic. Just type in a random password or gesture and your phone should unlock.

More proven methods to unlock your phone submitted by our readers

It’s possible that none of the options above got you passed the lock screen. Luckily, some of our readers struggling with that issue were able to find even more creative ways to bypass their lock screen and were so kind to share them. We’re extremely thankful for that!

We haven’t tested them throroughly on multiple devices or Android versions, so we cannot promise that those will work for you. However, a number of people managed to access their phone again and we hope you’ll do so as well.

Submitted by starr:

  1. Call your locked phone from another one.
  2. Accept the call and hit the back button during the call
  3. This should give you complete access to your phone
  4. Go to your phone’s security settings and try to remove the pin or pattern. To do so, you first need to put in the current one, which you obviously don’t know anymore. The only way is to guess and try out different combinations until you get it right. Should you get this far, then you can disable the pin or set a new one.

Submitted by Zubairuddin Buriro (probably only applicable to LG phones):

Zubairuddin’s very creative method can help you out in case you’re Wifi and data connection are both turned off. As mentioned above, this method might only work on LG phones, since it relies on LG’s native quick memo app.

  1. Press and hold the volume up key, until the Quick Memo app launches.
  2. Draw something random into it.
  3. Tap the sharing button and select SmartShare.
  4. Selecting SmartShare should activate your phone’s Bluetooth and Wifi (important here is Wifi).
  5. Make sure you’re close to a Wifi network that you’re phone connects to automatically.
  6. Now, you’re back online and you can go ahead and try all the methods discussed above that require a data connection.

Erase your phone (and lock screen) using Android Device Manager

If all the methods above didn’t work out, you need to move on to more drastic measures. In case Android Device Manager is enabled on your phone and unlocking it didn’t work, you can use it to erase all data by selecting the Erase button. Be aware that this will delete all apps, settings and other data on your phone. The good thing is, once the erasing process is done, you can use your phone again (after setting everything up).

Reset your phone to factory settings

If Android Device Manager doesn’t work at all for you, your last resort is to make a factory reset on your device. On Nexus devices, this can be done in recovery mode, for example. Below, we take you through the reset process that work with Nexus devices. If you own a different Android phone, check out this site and look for your manufacturer’s support page.

How to perform a factory reset on your Nexus using recovery mode:

Important note: If your Nexus device is running Android 5.1 or higher, you’re required to enter a Google username and password associated with your device after the factory reset process finishes. This is a security measure to make sure that no stranger is reseting your phone or tablet. If you fail to enter that data, the phone won’t be usable anymore. Really make sure you know your Googel username and password.

No matter what version of Android you’re running, you need to have an internet connection and if you just changed your Google account password, you need to wait at least 72 hours before starting the reset process.

  1. Turn off your device.
  2. Press the volume down AND power button and keep pressing them. Your device will start up and boot into the bootloader (you should see “Start” and an Android lying on its back).
  3. Press the volume down button to go through the different options until you see “Recovery Mode” (pressing volume down twice). Now press the power button to enter recovery mode.
  4. You should see an Android on its back and a red exclamation mark.
  5. Press and hold the power button, then press and release the volume up button. Now you should see “Android Recovery” written on the top together with some options.
  6. By pressing the volume down button, go down the options until “Wipe data/factory reset” is selected. Press the power button to select this option.
  7. Using the volume down button again, go down until “Yes – erase all user data” is selected. Make sure you read through the notes above and then, finally, press the power button to start the reset process.
  8. Once the process is done, press the power button to select the reboot option. Your device will now reboot and start the inital setup process of your device. That’s it! All you need to do now is to set up everything and restore your data.

You can also check out Google’s official page and follow the instructions there.

As already mentioned earlier, be aware that reseting or erasing your device will delete all data like apps, settings, videos and pictures.

Last words

Should you set up a new lock screen PIN or pattern. Make sure to write down the numbers or pattern on a piece of paper or in a text file on your computer to avoid that hassle the next time. If you run into any problems using the methods above, feel free to leave a comment.

the best and the only possible way is to hook a data plan sim card to your phone so you might get internet coverage while the id is confirmed. Happened to me once and I also freaked out, and it worked fine and smooth. Sorry for the super late reply.

  • enablewifi

Android has a fail , if they give us opportunity to turn on wi-fi when this happens we easily unlock by gmail account and password , nobody is going to do something when the screen is locked and wi-fi is on.

at the end I had to restore with hard reset losing all my precious data because I have no debbug usb, no custom recovery , ect ect …. and if we could enable wi-fi it would be easier to track devices which has been lost or stolen.

      same problem

    • AK

Android Device Manager can send the lock/reset command – but it won’t work unless you have set ADM as a Device Administrator on your phone beforehand!

Depending on which Android phone you have, but the setting is usually here:

Settings > Security > Device Administrators

    • Rusty Rebar

That is a feature. If you were able to unlock the pin by changing it on ADM, then it would not be very secure at all. Google could unlock your phone. If the pin is already set, ADM will not allow it to be changed, It will only set a pin in one does not already exist. If you have forgotten your pin, you will likely have to just wipe the phone.

I think this is because I have it connected to an ActiveSync server (company email). You delegate some administrative powers to your company when you do this. I’m trying to see if I can remotely suspend that control (remove the account) without having them reset my device (erase my phone).

You CANNOT change your lock code this way. I dug a little deeper myself and found the following info – THE “LOCK” OPTION IS FOR LOCKING YOUR PHONE WITH A PASSWORD IF YOU DON’T ALREADY HAVE ONE SET – in the event someone steals your phone. NOT for resetting it.

    • Kayla Nicole Curell

so is there a way to either unlock it or change the pass word witout factory reseting it ?

  • Zubairuddin Buriro

I faced the same problem on my LG G2, none of the option above works, if your phone’s Wifi and data connection is OFF. I tried a trick to enable the Wifi. So here is the procedure, if it can help someone like me:

    1) Press and hold Volume Up key, until the Quick Memo app opens
    2) Now draw anything
    3) Tap Sharing button, and select SmartShare
    4) Now Bluetooth and Wifi are connected, you require only Wifi though 😉
    5) Add your Google account credentials
    6) Its UNLOCKED.

    Thank you.

Hi there, I am stuck. my kids played around with the s5 mini and subsequently the fingerprint reader is no longer active. the device needs an alternative password from me which of course I don’t remember. been to Samsung service centre however they need to rest device and this means that I lose all data and contact info from the device. is there a way that I can access – I have even tried google device manager but no luck here – please help

  • leon

Doesn’t sound like its blocked as previously suggested. WiFi is the only thing that tends to work when a phone is blocked as connecting to wifi has nothing to do with the phones imei number. When a phone is blocked it basically means the imei number is blacklisted, so when the phone tries to establish a network connection with a cell tower the blacklisted imei credentials are blocked. No cell tower connection=no network=blocked phone.

I’m assuming you’ve already looked online for other people who may have had the exact same problem with the same make or model device. Most problems can be a known issue throughout the whole model of the device and other people may have already found a successful fix.

Sound like its a software glitch, I’ve had a variety of similar glitches but never this exact one.

First step would be to factory reset the phone, google it to find out how. this will be enough to fix a software glitch in most cases.

Second id try to download a WiFi connectivity apk, I’m sure there’s one out there. You can download to pc and transfer to your phone, then use a file manager (most phones will have one) to find the apk and click to install. Some phones will need “unknown source” for app installations enabled, as the app is not downloaded directly from the app store. This can be found in a hidden setting menu called “developers options” or something similar, google it to find out where it can be found on your make and model phone.

    If that doesn’t work…
Perform the next step at your own risk, as no one else is liable for the damage it can cause to your device if not done correctly, and even then there is no guarantee.

Failing that I’d then root the phone, install a custom recovery (again details of how to do it can be found on google or youtube). Once the device is rooted install some custom software (rom). Take your time picking a rom as there is usually a wide variety, depending on your phones make and model. Check out the xda forum for compatible roms and they’re different features.

If non of this works you could still look online for various software patches or fixes you can flash to your now rooted device.

If a new rom fixes the issue, look into all the wonderful things you can now do with your rooted phone…

the hard or factory reset option should be accessible from pressing and holding a couple of buttons during the phone turning on, google will tell ya which buttons it is. Also search for LG secret codes on google, these are phone pad codes you type in and dial that can open up a bunch of other options for you.

  • Joe R.

Is this effected by the new bug? to many character’s crash the lock screen?

  • Vino

WTF is going on with android/ google and Samsung i’ve been up all night trying unsuccessfully, all these options to unlock my phone- nothing seems to work. Is this another pathetic effort to have us “freely” give up more privacy in order to comply with “updates” B.S. to use our phones (products and services we’ve already paid for), come on!!! We’re being held hostage… can someone find a solution- no body wants to reset to factory mode.

Did you ever figure out how to unlock your phone without hard resetting it?

      • Keely

@marisidsidberry:disqus did you ever unlock your phone without resetting it? I have photos of my baby I don’t want to loose but none of the above things are working

        • Mari Sid Sidberry

Unfortunately, my phone has a major problem, it reset itself and I lost every important thing that I needed from this phone. I have met many people that say that this has to be a ploy from the phone companies since they have had similar issues and they knew their passwords as I did. Verizon has asked me to go in to exchange my phone. I haven’t had it long and have had nothing but problems with it. Now I have no lock on it so it won’t happen again.

        • Mari Sid Sidberry

If you are trying to use your gmail login and it’s still not working, it might be a problem with 2 step verification. Go into your gmail account and turn it off. Then try again on your phone/tablet. Change your pattern. Then go turn 2 step back on. Worked for me.

    • Danny Gallacher

Joe……you diamond….worked for me…….Cheers mate, very much appreciated!!!!

    • Abeera

      Turn what off?

      • Joe Stirling

Turn off 2 step verification. Log into your Gmail from your computer or another device, like your phone.

  • Eric Juarez

So the SD card message kinda worked for me. When I selected the SD card to boot from it also gave me errors but I let it run and eventually it rebooted on it own. But all it did was restore the phone. it didn’t Disable anything, I lost all the data that was on the phone and I was trying to do that.

  • starr

    (I have a Droid Turbo)
So when I set my pin last night I hit the wrong numbers in the same order so I had absolutely no idea what my new pin was so here is what I did
    1.Called myself
2.Hit the back button in the call
and i had complete access to my phone
3.went to security settings to remove pin guessed it many times until i had it
4.changed my pin back to normal

There may be a few other things you can do other than continually guessing but hitting the back button in the call should give you full access.

  • Nur Fazlin Bte Omar

The screen on my Samsung S3 has gone completely black except for a tiny part of the upper right corner; therefore, I can’t see the keypad or anything else on the screen in order to unlock the phone. I have 2 years worth of photos on there that I can’t access. I know, I should have backed them up a long time ago. Anyway, I didn’t. Is there anyway to plug something into the phone and override the screen lock to retrieve my files???

Doesn’t work on Xperia Z3. You don’t get the option to select “forgot pattern”. You just get a 25 second timeout and then you have to draw your unlock pattern again.
My problem is that my screen is broken in such a way that I can’t draw the pattern, so I’m stuck. 🙁

    • Joe Stirling

Have you tried logging into the Gmail account that’s associated with the phone from your computer? I’ve logged in go to Android device manager and reset your lock screen from there.

I have android mobile with Android Lollipop 5.1.1 and I want to unlock the mobile without working on mobile. I have added pattern before screen damage.

    Phone details:

    1) Touch of mobile is damages and I can hardly use touch so working on cell is not possible. (I believe) I can type digit 3 on cell many times.
    2) I tried to unlock device with ADM but cell dont display option to fill pin to unlock
    3) I have access to Google account and can install any apps.

    4) Memory card can be inserted into mobile.

In summary, I want to unlock or bypass pattern of mobile by using computer or USB or Google account. How it can be possible and I want to do without factory reset?

Hi, my samsung s6 has locked and i reset the PIN . when i triewd entering that PIN in to unlock the home screen it says that it is incorrect PIN. In the past when i had this problem I reset it by entering a google account password. Now, there is no option for me to login in to google account.

Also, I have decided to further lock my screen in using Android Device Manager lock, and by entering the correct one it does not seem to work. On that website does it show me to unlock it? Does it give me any option to remove all security credentials? Any help is much appreciated!

  • Rosemary Nicols

    Hi everyone,
I had the problem that my right side of my screen was not working, so I could not get into my phone at all, as the OK button wouldn’t work. I successfully got into my phone with an “On the Go USB adapter” that allowed me to plug a mouse into my phone and the mouse bypassed the touchscreen. Then I changed the settings to “no password”, and now I’m able to retrieve my contacts, music, etc, before I wipe the phone to send it back to the warranty company. Local phone repair companies wanted to charge me $40 to $100 to do this, and I paid $26.99 for the adapter.

Omg I found a new one. I was on LG-H420 (no joke) android 6.0
First I turned on safe mode by holding the shut down option on the screen it opened up the safe mode option. ( Be sure that your phone is connected to your computer )

The safe mode turned on. It sayed to input my pin code (which I forgot) I input a random one. And then it glitched and gave me the option to select what I want to do with my device ( that’s where the plugged in to the computer comes in ) I changed my password and pin. That’s it I hope that this may be useful to somebody, sorry for my grammar.

Ok so the other night i decided to set a new screen lock pattern for my Moto X (2nd Gen). The problem is i have forgotten it and i can’t get back into my phone!

After looking this up online via a google search and delving into some forum posts i have tried using ADM (Android Device Manager) method of remotely locking the phone from another device and then setting a new password so that it overrides the pattern lock system and lets me log in via that but no luck there…. It just says “Since Google has verified that a screen lock is already set, the password that you entered won’t be needed.”

    Any suggestions???

I am running the latest Android software, Marshmallow.

I really don’t want to have to reset my phone and lose my data.

  • Ouisghian Zodah

I realize this is an old post, but I’m hoping someone is still paying attention, as I could really use some help! I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 4, that I dropped this morning. The phone “seems” to work, but the screen is black and unusable. I’ve determined that I’ll need to take it for some diagnostics and repair, but I’d first like to, if possible, get a few things off of my phone. The problem is, I can’t access my phone without first unlocking it.

So, is it possible to, using my PC, unlock and access my phone in order to remove pics and videos that I’d rather not find online later on, without the ability to actually access my phone directly?

On Galaxy S6 the device manager doesn’t seem to be setting a new password, even though I can see the password “clue” I entered. But when trying to enter the temporary password it says it’s wrong (and then locks the device for an hour).

Did anyone get this issue and find a solution? Because I don’t think this method works, and only a complete wipe would help.
