5G Home Internet Providers

For sure, if you’ve recently bought a new phone or had contact with your home internet carrier, you’ve been asked if you want to have a 5G device. Even if you were just watching the news, there was a lot of controversy around the 5G network and Covid-19. Some people went so far as to claim it’s alien technology. But, let’s not go there.

Let’s see in a couple of simple sentences what is a 5G and why should you switch to 5G when getting a new Internet package for your home.

What is the 5G network?

Simply speaking, 5G is the fifth generation of wireless technology. This is where the name 5G came from. It’s an advanced 4G network that most of us were using until recently. The technology is more or less the same as 4G is using, but the difference is that 5G has incorporated higher-frequency radio bands which makes the Internet faster and the connection more stable. Another good thing about 5G – it’s using small cell transmitters posted to utility boxes and light poles which enables the signal to reach even the most distant areas. In simple words, it has larger coverage than the 4G network.

Currently, there are 3 types of 5G.

  1. Low-band 5G has almost the same speed as 4G but reaches rural areas
  2. Mid-band 5G; has a shorter distance range, but a higher speed
  3. High-band 5G; an extremely fast network that can reach even 1 Gbps. However, it’s used in certain areas like buildings or stadiums, since it has poor penetration capabilities.

Now, after you’ve seen what is 5G and what are the advantages of using this network, let’s see where can you apply to get it installed in your home. Several carriers are providing 5G home Internet services. I’ve listed them here with all the pros and cons, so you can find the best option for yourself.

5G Home Internet Providers – pros and cons

All of the providers offering 5G are using a fixed wireless connection through a 5G network to provide your home Internet. Fixed wireless is actually equipment turning radio waves into Internet service. It’s created from a fixed antenna connecting to a nearby wireless tower.

Among the first to offer 5G home Internet services were T-Mobile and Verizon followed by AT&T. Sprint was the fourth in this race, but since it merged with T-Mobile, we can say that we have the three biggest players in the 5G home Internet game. Since the technology is still in development, we can expect smaller companies to join the race soon. However, it can happen that their offer will be more competitive. Let’s see what we are dealing with for now.

T-Mobile 5G Home Internet Offer

T-Mobile claims to offer the highest speed, reliable Internet connection, and a high area of coverage. When it comes to price, it’s $60 per month with AutoPay. Also, you are getting the 5G home Internet equipment for free, you do not have to sign a long-term contract, and support is available for you 24/7.

We can say that this offer is alright, however, there is not much of a choice. There is one package and there is nothing included besides the Internet itself. What is good, the area of coverage is really high and you do not need to sign a year contract or similar. You can try it out for a month and see how it works for you.

Verizon 5G Home Internet Offer

When it comes to Verizon, this is the deal. You can schedule a switch to 5G equipment any time it works for you, the equipment itself is free, there are no data limits, and no need to sign a long-term contract. As per Verizon’s website, the Internet this company offers is ultra-high and reliable.

When we come to costs, you’ll need to pay $50 per month if you have a mobile plan with this carrier or $70 if you do not have a mobile plan. Note that these prices are with taxes excluded. The typical Internet speed is around 300 Mbps, with the possibility to go up to 1 Gbps. Sounds like a solid offer.

And the thing T-Mobile does not offer, you have included Discovery+ for one year for free with 5G home Internet. After one year, you will pay $6.99 per month.

So, the pros here are short-term contracts, the possibility to lower the price if you have a mobile plan with Verizon, and the high internet speed. However, the coverage seems to be a bit lower. To check if you are in Verizon’s area of coverage, please click here.

AT&T 5G Home Internet Offer

Here, there is not much to say. At the moment, the company does not offer 5G home Internet, it provides only fixed wireless services. Since 5G is using this same technology, I believe that 5G will shortly be available with AT&T as well. The price for the fixed wireless Internet is $59.99 per month without taxes. If you decide to include DirecTV as well, the price is $119.98 per month before taxes. The coverage of AT&T is exceptional even in rural areas, which makes me believe that once available, their 5G home Internet might have the best coverage.

However, AT&T is more focused on mobile phones, offering 5G and 5G+ in certain areas.

Now, after we’ve discussed all the offers, you can find the one that suits you the most. Good luck!
