How To Restore Deleted Text Messages On iPhone

How To Restore Deleted Text Messages On iPhone

Let’s say you tried to jailbreak your iPhone or update the iOS version. During the process, your text messages were lost. Sometimes, they get lost without you even knowing how. Yes, I know, it had to be you, but in some cases, you just do not have a logical explanation. And it’s fine. Data loss occurs, and as long as you have a chance to retrieve everything, there’s nothing to worry about. Your iPhone saves all the text messages, MMS, and iMessage to SQLite database bundled into many apps for safety. Basically, this SQLite database will fill up until it’s full, and then new messages will be written over. But until it happens, you can restore all your messages from this particular moment. They might not be in plain sight, but there’s a way to find them.

It can happen that these messages are crucial for your business, or you simply like to have everything organized. In that case, walk with me through this article, and I will show you how to restore deleted text messages on iPhone.

How to restore deleted text messages on iOS 13 and iOS 14

Since these two iOS versions are currently the most used, I would like to show you how to recover your deleted text messages on them.

Depending on how you do backup of your iPhone, there are several different methods to restore deleted text messages on your device – iCloud, computer, third-party apps. Let’s go method by method and see what would be the best option for you.

Do not worry. By the end of this article, I am positive you will have your messages back.

Recovering deleted text messages using iCloud

If your iPhone is set to do backup using iCloud, then your messages are stored over there. The service backs up text messages, MMS, and iMessage, but you need to use the same SIM card that you received text messages on. Follow the steps below to recover deleted text messages from iCloud backup.

  1. Go to Settings > Name
  2. Tap on iCloud > iCloud Backup
  3. If iCloud Backup is enabled, you can move on to the next step
  1. Go to Settings > General
  2. Tap on Reset to erase your iPhone
  1. Choose Erase All Content and Settings
  1. You will be asked to recover your data from iCloud Backup
  2. Choose Restore from Backup

That’s it! Everything has been recovered to your last backup, including your text messages.

Restoring texts from Mac (OS Catalina)

If you’re doing backup to your computer, for sure, you have numerous backups. Therefore, you can choose any of those that have texts you wish to retrieve. The first thing to do if you want to use a backup from your Mac is to disable the Find My iPhone feature. Here is how.

  1. Go to Settings > Tap on your name
  2. Click on Find My > Find My iPhone
  3. Switch the toggle off

Now you are ready for a Mac backup.

First of all, you should connect USB to your Mac and iPhone. Open Finder app. Under the Locations sidebar, you will see your iPhone. Tap on it. Click on Manage Backups and choose the one you wish to use to restore your messages. Click on Restore iPhone. Once the process is done and your device is backed up, you will see your text messages again.

Try consulting a phone service provider

Sometimes, your phone service provider is having its own backup of your calls and text messages. It’s a long shot but worth trying. Call ISP’s support or tech department, explain the situation and ask if, by any chance, they have a backup of your text messages. If yes, they could be able to help you restore everything to your SIM card, and from there, you can see the messages on your phone.

As I said, long shot but costs nothing.

Third-party app

If you do not have a backup and none of the solutions above can help, try some third-party app. I tried a couple of apps personally and can recommend Dr.Fone – Data Recovery app for iPhone that can help you recover not just text messages but deleted photos and files as well. This one was the most successful for me. However, I guess it depends a lot on the phone model. The app is easy to install, and all you need to do is connect your iPhone to a computer, navigate to Data Recovery and choose text messages. Afterward, the app will do its job, and you will get your messages back.

For further assistance, you can check Apple’s forum. Someone might have had the same issue as you.

Hopefully, by now, you have your messages back, and this guide was helpful. If you have any other ideas on how to recover deleted text messages on your iPhone, please leave a comment in the section below.
