The Legend of Zelda – The Hyrule Fantasy: Zelda no Densetsu was the Japanese title for The Legend of Zelda is a 1986 action-adventure video game created by Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka and published by Nintendo. The plot revolves around an elf-like boy named Link, who sets out to collect the eight fragments of the Triforce of Wisdom in order to save Princess Zelda from Ganon, the antagonist.

The player controls Link from a top-down perspective throughout the game, navigating through the overworld and dungeons, gathering weapons, battling foes, and uncovering secrets along the way. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was first released in Japan in February 1986 as a launch game for the Family Computer Disk System accessory.

More than a year later, the Nintendo Entertainment System in cartridge format was released in North America and Europe, making it the first home console game to incorporate an internal battery for data storage.

The Legend of Zelda

The Hyrule Fantasy: Zelda no Densetsu 1 was the Japanese title for this version, which was released in 1994.  The game was ported to the GameCube and Game Boy Advance, and is now accessible on the Wii, Nintendo 3DS, and Wii U on the Virtual Console. It was also one of 30 games included in the NES Classic Edition console, and it can be played on the Nintendo Switch via the NES Switch Online service.

Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda was a critical and financial triumph. The game went on to sell over 6.5 million copies, kickstart a significant franchise, and appear on lists of the best video games of all time. Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, a sequel, was released in Japan for the Famicom Disk System less than a year after its predecessor, and numerous sequels and spinoffs have followed in the decades afterwards.

Gameplay

The Legend of Zelda combines action, adventure, and role-playing game components. The player controls Link as he wanders the overworld, a big outdoor terrain with numerous environments, from a flip-screen above perspective.  While the player starts the game with only a little shield, a mysterious cave beckons them inside, where an elderly man entrusts Link with a sword to use as his primary weapon, along with the auspicious first warning, “GOING ALONE IS DANGEROUS! LISTEN TO THIS “,

Link finds and collects numerous items throughout the quest that enhance his powers, such as Heart Containers, which increase his life metre; magic rings, which reduce the amount of damage Link gets from opponent assaults; and stronger swords, which allow Link to inflict more damage on adversaries.

These objects are mostly found in caves all around the country. Some are easily accessible, while others are tucked away behind rocks, forests, and waterfalls.  Deadly animals strewn throughout everywhere drop Rupees, the game’s currency, when defeated. Rupees can also be found in hidden treasure chests and are used to purchase items like bombs and arrows at shops.

Entrances to huge underground dungeons housing the parts of the Triforce of Wisdom are hidden in the overworld.

Dungeon

Each dungeon has its own maze-like arrangement of rooms linked by doorways and secret tunnels, which are frequently blocked by monsters (who must be slain) or blocks (which must be moved to gain entrance). Dungeons also include valuable things Link can add to his inventory, like a boomerang for stunning opponents and collecting faraway goods and a magical recorder that allows Link to teleport to the entrance of any dungeon he has cleared previously.

Completing each dungeon and obtaining all eight parts of the Triforce of Wisdom grants access to the final dungeon, where Ganon must be defeated and Zelda rescued.

The game can be completed by travelling to any dungeon on the overworld, and it is entirely flexible for players, though the complexity of the game gradually increases, and some chambers can only be passed by using equipment obtained in prior places. After gaining valuable equipment, there are dungeons with secret entrances that must be discovered while freely traversing the overworld.

This flexibility provides for a variety of methods to move through the game. It is possible to defeat the last boss without first getting the typically necessary sword. The game world has over 600 different scenes, with the overworld having over 97 different scenes and the underground having nine different multi-scene labyrinths.

Additional information: The Legend of Zelda’s fictional timeline

The Legend of Zelda takes set in an alternate reality known as “The Era of Decline,” according to the official Zelda Chronology. The Legend of Zelda takes place in this era, when Hyrule has been reduced to a small kingdom with citizens living in caves.

Story

The Legend of Zelda’s story is told in the instruction booklet and in the short prologue that follows the title screen: When an army commanded by Ganon, the prince of darkness, invaded and seized the Triforce of Power, one component of a magical item that alone bestows enormous strength, a little kingdom in Hyrule was enveloped in chaos.

Princess Zelda breaks the Triforce of Wisdom into eight fragments and conceals them in various underground dungeons to prevent him from obtaining it. Before being taken by Ganon, she orders Impa, her nursemaid, to find someone brave enough to defend the country.

The old woman is surrounded by Ganon’s henchmen while traversing the land when a young boy named Link appears and saves her. After hearing Impa’s plea, he vows to save Zelda and sets out to reassemble the Triforce of Wisdom’s scattered components so that Ganon can be defeated.

Throughout the story, Link locates and braves the eight underworld labyrinths, retrieving each fragment beyond their defeated guardian monsters. He is able to infiltrate Ganon’s hideaway in Death Mountain with the completed Triforce of Wisdom, confronting the prince of darkness and destroying him with the Silver Arrow.

Link recovers the Triforce of Power from Ganon’s ashes and presents it to Princess Zelda, together with the repaired Triforce of Wisdom, and peace returns to Hyrule.

FAQs

Q1: Should I start with the first Legend of Zelda game?

Depending on the duration of playtime requested, Breath of the Wild or Link’s Awakening would be fantastic choices for individuals with a Switch who want to dive into The Legend of Zelda for the first time.

Q2: What is the appeal of Zelda?

The primary gameplay of Zelda games is incredibly enjoyable and fulfilling for most individuals. They blend puzzle solving, combat, and exploration with unique aesthetics and a (usually) basic and pleasant tale in a beautiful, simple, tight package. They’re simply well-designed, user-friendly games.

Q3: Is there a true story behind The Legend of Zelda?

Shigeru Miyamoto’s “explorations” as a young kid in the mountains, forests, and caverns surrounding his childhood home in Sonobe, Japan, where he travelled into forests with secluded lakes, caves, and rural towns, inspired The Legend of Zelda.

Q4: Are the Zelda games linked?

While Aonuma has claimed that all of the Zelda games take place in a single continuum, the third timeline branch, in which Link fails his quest during Ocarina of Time, appears to be a second, mutually independent chronology that is unrelated to any other section of the history.

Q5: Is Zelda the sister of Link?

Finally, Nintendo has never publicly declared that Zelda and Link are brothers and sisters, and the only instances in Zelda culture where that idea has been openly stated are regarded non-canonical.

Q6: What is the total number of Legend of Zelda games?

Nintendo has released 20 games in all, counting the NES Zelda from 1986 to Breath of the Wild 2. Nintendo, on the other hand, has released multiple spinoffs. Hyrule Warriors, The Legend of Zelda Game & Watch are among them (the 1989 version, not the 2021 version).
