Siri Spying Settlement: Are You Eligible for a Share of Apple’s $95M Payout?

0

Have you ever had the impression that your Apple device or iPhone was eavesdropping on you? A $95 million settlement in the Lopez v. Apple lawsuit could qualify you for a payout.

This complaint contends that Apple’s speech assistant, Siri, was turned on accidentally and recorded customers’ private talks, allegedly passing the recordings on to advertisers and other third parties. Although Apple refutes these charges, a settlement has been struck and you could be eligible for reimbursement.

What Is the Siri Lawsuit About?

Filed in 2021, the class-action suit Lopez v. Apple claims Apple recorded private customer talks by means of unintentional Siri activations. Plaintiffs say these recordings were sent to advertisers who used the data to run focused ads, hence generating significant privacy issues. The complaint references studies indicating that even Apple’s subcontractors had access to these talks, which sometimes included very private information.

Who Is Eligible for the Siri Settlement?

You might qualify for reimbursement should you:

  • You bought or owned a Siri-enabled Apple device between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024.
  • During a private or confidential conversation, you had a Siri activation you didn’t intend.

Eligibility is on self-certification; that is, you must swear that Siri recorded a private chat accidentally.

Which Apple Devices Qualify?

Included are all Siri-capable Apple devices, such as:

  • iPhones
  • iPads
  • Apple Watches
  • MacBooks
  • iMacs
  • HomePod Speakers
  • Apple TV Streaming Boxes
  • iPod Touches

Should you have used any of these gadgets since 2014, you most likely qualify.

How to File a Claim for the Siri Settlement

Visit the official Lopez Voice Assistant Settlement site to file your claim. Those who got a postcard or email from the settlement administrators may apply using their claim ID and verification code.

Should you not get one, you may still manually submit a claim on the site.

Important Note:

To be eligible for compensation, you have to submit your claim before the deadline indicated on the settlement website.

Why This Settlement Matters

Privacy is more crucial than ever in the era of smart devices and voice assistants. This case draws attention to worries many users have had for years—that technology might be listening even when not intended. Though Apple claims any data exchange was restricted and meant for Siri enhancement, this agreement seeks to address those claims with the impacted consumers.
