Google has said that its Workspace apps, such as Google Docs, Gmail, Sheets, and Slides, will soon have generative AI features. The new features include new ways to use AI to generate, summarize, and brainstorm text in Google Docs, similar to how many people use OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

The ability to have AI create full emails in Gmail based on users’ short bullet points, and the ability for AI to create images, audio, and video to illustrate presentations in Slides, similar to how OpenAI’s DALL-E and Stable Diffusion are used in Microsoft Designer and Canva, respectively.

Google’s announcement shows how eager it is to catch up to competitors in the new race to develop AI. Since ChatGPT came out last year and Bing with chatbots came out in February from Microsoft, the search giant has been rushing to add AI features that are similar. Reports say that the company sent out a “code red” in December, telling staff to add AI tools to all of its user products, which are used by billions of people, in a few months.

Google has said that its Workspace apps, such as Google Docs, Gmail, Sheets, Slides, Meet, and Chat, will soon have new AI features. With images, audio, and video that are made automatically in Slides, they will be able to bring their creative ideas to life. Using auto-completion, formula generation, and contextual categorization, Sheets users will be able to go from raw data to insights and analysis. Users of Meet will be able to make their own backgrounds and make notes.

Users will be able to set up workflows to get things done with the new AI features in Chat. “We’ll let our trusted testers know about these new experiences this month. We’ll start with English in the US. Google said in a blog post,

“From there, we’ll iterate and improve the experiences before making them more widely available to consumers, small businesses, enterprises, and educational institutions in more countries and languages.” Google is getting too fast, that’s for sure.

Even though the company has announced a lot of new features, “trusted testers” in the US will only be able to use the first AI writing tool in Docs and Gmail this month. This is also how Google told people that Bard, an app that competes with ChatGPT, was now out. Google says that these and other features will be available later this year, but it didn’t say when.

What Kinds of AI Tools Will Workspace Get?

Many new features are being added to Google’s Workspace apps, like Gmail, Docs, Slides, and Sheets. The company says that with the tools, you will be able to do the following:

  • You can use Gmail to write, reply, summarize, and organize messages.
  • You can plan, edit, write, and rewrite in Docs.
  • Slides lets you make presentations that are made automatically with pictures, sound, and video.
  • Sheets makes it easy to get insights and analysis from raw data by auto-filling, generating formulas, and putting things into groups based on their context.
  • Meet lets you make new backgrounds and make notes.
  • You can set up things in Chat.
  • Get the newsletter from Talking Tech sent to your inbox.

The AI writing and brainstorming tools in Docs and Gmail might be the most useful of all the new features. In the same way, AI tools will let users change or add to text. Google recommends that you write down a few bullet points about a work meeting. Then, Google Docs can make this into a “more polished summary,” and users can choose the tone by typing things like “more whimsical” or “formal.”

In a video demo, Google shows how AI can be used to write personalized marketing messages for clients, turn bullet points into a full email, and summarize the content of a long email chain in Gmail. Again, we’ve seen these things before. Slack just said that it will use ChatGPT in a similar way to summarize conversations.

New Search Feature

People say that Google is also working on a new “Search Companion” feature for its Google Chrome web browser. With the Search Companion, Lens will be able to search the web in a great new way. The tech giant wants to make Lens and Chrome work better together with this new feature.

When Will Google Launch the Features?

Google said it would first give the tools to trusted testers before making them available to everyone. At first, the Bard chatbot could also be used by a group of trusted testers. Google Workspace is used by more than 3 billion people, according to the search giant.
