The newest game by Build A Rocket Boy, MindsEye, combines cinematic storytelling with player-driven game production. You can get it now.

MindsEye, Build A Rocket Boy’s (BARB) new third-person shooter, is now available on the Epic Games Store. It gives players a Hollywood-level action experience with a unique twist. Since its announcement in 2022, the game has been developed in secret. It created a big impression at the IOI Showcase on June 6. Adam Whiting, the Assistant Game Director at BARB, says that they chose to stay out of the spotlight until right before launch on purpose.

Whiting said during a talk at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel after the presentation, “There’s something really powerful about showing people something cool and saying, ‘You don’t have to wait—it’s available now.'”

A Cinematic Third-Person Shooter with a Strong Narrative

MindsEye is basically a linear, 14- to 18-hour single-player narrative with Jacob Diaz, a former soldier who has a strange brain device called the MindsEye implanted in his head. Diaz goes to the desert city of Redrock to find out what really happened to him after having intense, unexplainable flashbacks.

Whiting calls the game a “tightly crafted linear narrative action-adventure with high cinematic value.” One of the best things about the game is how smoothly it goes from cutscenes to gameplay. This makes the game feel like you’re going through a big action movie. It has gameplay that is similar to Gears of War and Uncharted, with a concentration on great story momentum and well-done set pieces.

The MindsDIY Toolkit: Empowering Players to Build

MindsDIY, the game’s unique player building tool, sets MindsEye apart from other shooters. This powerful set of tools, which comes with every copy of the game, is similar to the ones the development team uses. It lets players make their own gaming experiences, levels, assets, and gameplay sequences, either by using simple templates or by going through a more complicated creation process.

“Making games costs a lot of money and takes a lot of time.” Whiting says, “Now we have a tool that lets us quickly and creatively test out new ideas. We’re giving players the same power.”

The toolkit is made for developers of various skill levels, with features like a drag-and-drop hot bar system and detailed instructions. MindsDIY gives gamers the tools and help they need to design whole campaigns or just change the levels that are already there.

The Connection to ‘Everywhere’

BARB smartly leveraged their former project, Everywhere, to secretly test the MindsDIY toolbox with real users without letting them know what else they were working on. While Everywhere will come back in a new form, MindsEye is now the basis for BARB’s changing vision.

The MindsEye creation tools work perfectly with the next edition of Everywhere. This means that levels and content made in one game may be easily moved to the other. A “stamp system” also lets people exchange things like vehicles or environments in a community-driven asset library that gets bigger over time.

Whiting says, “When Everywhere comes back, everything you make will be portable and available in MindsEye.” Seeing that interoperability work already is quite satisfying.

A Bold Vision for the Future

MindsEye wants to be more than just a one-time release by focusing on both high-quality gameplay and community-driven innovation. It marks the start of an ambitious plan for Build A Rocket Boy, in which players and developers work together to shape the future of interactive entertainment.

Whiting says, “MindsEye is the beginning of something bigger.” “We’re excited for players to join us on this journey.”

You can now get MindsEye on the Epic Games Store. MindsEye is a revolutionary combination that gives you both a thrilling action-adventure and a new creative platform to explore.
