Samsung is gearing up to launch two “bendable” smartphones by next year. One of the versions of these smartphone would be foldable like a book or a cosmetic compact.
As per a report by Bloomberg, these phones are most likely to be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress, next year in February in Barcelona. One of these bendable smartphones will feature a 5-inch display when folded and an 8-inch full display when opened. Somewhat a mix of tablet and smartphone. If these devices turn out to be as cool as they look on paper than we could see Samsung giving some serious competition to Apple. Also, Samsung is presently the biggest provider of OLED panels for mobile products.
Lee Seung Woo, an analyst at IBK Securities Co. in Seoul, says,“This product could be a game-changer if Samsung successfully comes up with a user interface suitable for bendable screens. Next year is a probable scenario. Their biggest obstacle was related to making transparent plastics and making them durable, which seems resolved by now.”
The entire project is codenamed as “Project Valley”. Samsung is launching these devices around the time when Apple’s planning to launch its iPhone featuring OLED screens. Samsung has already released a video that gives us a fair idea about how these phones would look like and how easily they will be to handle.
However, the question remains that how would users take this new design? And are we ready to use a smartphone that folds like a book and gets into our pockets? It would be interesting to see how Samsung price these devices. Not many users would go for a foldable smartphone priced higher than the leading flagships of this year. But of course, the very idea of using a foldable smartphone would be really thrilling as well. What’s your take? Would you want to use a foldable smartphone?
